Summer 2024 Award Recipients
Outstanding Graduate AwardMaurice Bin Batubenga is a Human Resources clerk and French Interpreter at Tyson Foods. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 2014 from Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, and worked his way up from a parking lot cashier to his current position. After earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from UA Grantham, he is using his education to seek a leadership position within the company.
Maurice encourages his community to pursue education and demonstrates how a degree can change lives: "I came to the USA in 2014, from the Republic of South Africa, with my wife and children. I work full-time for Tyson Foods, and for five years I was a student at UA Grantham. It was not easy as a bread-winner to work ten hours a day, sometimes six days a week and be a college student at the same time. No matter how difficult it was, I do not remember being behind with my assignments or my weekly discussions. Because I know that wherever there is a will, there is always a way. I knew what I was pursuing, that is why nothing could distract me."
Outstanding Advisor AwardChristina McBroomChristina McBroom was selected for the Outstanding Advisor Award for her dedication to supporting her students as they work to achieve their educational goals. As UA Grantham Student Advisor for more than 10 years, Christina cherishes the opportunity she’s had to help countless achieve their educational goals and dreams. It's bittersweet to be finishing my degree and not having him here physically to celebrate it with me. I started out wanting to make him proud and finish what he never had the chance to, but ended up making myself proud in the process.August of 2016 my youngest brother suddenly passed away at age 25. Before he passed, he'd recently enrolled in school to finally get his degree. He encouraged me to get back into school, too, saying we could finish together. Unfortunately, he passed before he could even begin classes. I promised that I would finish for the both of us. It’s bittersweet to be finishing my degree and not having him here physically to celebrate it with me. Completing my Associate Degree is one of the biggest accomplishments I have achieved. Completing my Associate Degree is one of the biggest accomplishments I have achieved. I have pushed my way through very tough times to get here. I have continued being active in my courses during two family deaths, and seven surgeries. I did it while I was in labor in the hospital. I struggle daily with chronic pain due to being hit by a car as a pedestrian. I have gained confidence throughout my educational journey; this shows how resilient I am to give my children and myself a better and brighter future. One person that has always been a positive influence and motivator for me has been my University of Arkansas Grantham student advisor Jennifer Devincenzi. She is always letting me know you got this!Amber W., AAS in Medical Administrative Assistant

The University of Arkansas Grantham has changed my life for the better and I will forever be grateful to its faculty.During my first two terms I made the deans list with excellent grades. My grades suffered dramatically during my third term after the death of my mother to a sudden, unexpected illness, my fourth term grandson was born with complications, and my family also relocated in a big move across the state. Although my grades suffered I was determined to push through, as best I could at the time with hopes of obtaining my first degree. The University of Arkansas Grantham has changed my life for the better and I will forever be grateful to its faculty.Nikki H., AAS in Medical Administrative Assistant

As a non-traditional student who had not taken a college course in the last 20 years, returning to school was a daunting experience. The staff and professors at UA Grantham provided a great support system and helped me navigate the application process, financial aid, and each course. The thing I was most afraid of with an online degree program was the distance between professors and students, and that was not the case here. All of the professors were willing to answer any questions and available when needed. I recommend it to anyone thinking of going back to school or even continuing their education. UA Grantham is a wonderful place to do this.Katherine R., MBA in Business Administration - Information Management

Going to college was always a dream of mine ... Never allow your fears to hinder your journey.Going to college was always a dream of mine, but it never seem like the right time to get started. In 2019 I decided to make a bucket list of things that I wanted to accomplish, and getting my associate degree was one of the things on that list. I submitted my application, it was accepted and I started Grantham on August 14, 2019. I received my Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, August of 2021.( My only regret is that because of the pandemic, I was not able to walk). After accomplishing this milestone I decided to continue my education and work toward my bachelors degree in the same field, and as of February 2024, I will be a two time alumna of Grantham University. Never allow your fears to hinder your journey.Barbara C., BA in Criminal Justice

I came to the USA in 2014, from the Republic of South Africa with my wife and children. I work full-time for Tyson Foods, a meat processing company, and for five years I was a student of the University of Grantham online. It was not easy as a bread winner, to work 10 hours a day, sometimes 6 days a week and be a college student at the same time. No matter how difficult it was, I do not remember being behind with my assignments or my weekly discussions. Because I know that wherever there is a will, there is always a way. I knew what I was pursuing, that is why nothing could distract me.Maurice B., BBA in Business Administration
